5 Eldritch Horrors from the Deep Sea that will Haunt your Nightmares

A lot of what we know about the deep sea has come to light in the last few decades and it seems that every trip down to the abyss reveals the wonderful, fascinatingly alien world. Here are some of the nightmares that give me the willies.

1. Big Fin Squid

This is one of the many strange aliens we share this blue planet with. Thankfully though they live in a place many of us will never go, they have been seen at 7,000 feet (about twice the height of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world) deep.

Diving into the deep sea is a dangerous expedition, takes months of planning and there is no guarantee you will find what you are looking for.

It is suspected that a total of 4 specimens have been “caught” or washed up on shore after the creatures died. They have arms that are upwards of 20 times their body length.

It is suspected to eat by dragging their arms through the ocean to capture their prey. But we honestly don’t know much about these animals because the only specimens that have been studied are either juveniles or paralarva.

We do know that they are likely the deepest living squid at 20,000 feet (about twice the height of Mount St. Helens) deep. And while humans in submersibles…
